Coffee became a popular export commodity for the United States during the Revolutionary War. In 1792, it was discovered that an excellent source of caffeine and other plant nutrients was available near Raleigh, North Carolina. The first mills were built in Morganton to process this new resource.
Morganton is a small town in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Yadkin River. The population was 2,541 at the 2010 census. Morganton is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1836 by farmers who moved from Scotland to what is now Morganton after experiencing major crop failures during their previous patterns of agriculture in that area. The original settlers were Presbyterian ministers and their families who named their new community after Scottish minister John Ballantyne, one of England's most popular preachers during that time period. Morganton experienced its first documented resident when Joshua Hancock arrived as a slave in 1800 from Africa. He worked on a farm near Morganton until his own release in 1802 and then returned to work on his father's farm where he remained until he sold his share to David Wilkinson in 1824. From here, he began to purchase land around Morganton and by 1830 had erected a log cabin and several other structures including a storehouse, barn, blacksmith shop, and mill which still stands today within the confines of Morganton Village Hall building (now used as a public library). In 1840, David Wilkinson married Margaret Rutherford (née Ballantyne) and together they started up an extensive mercantile enterprise with businesses such as selling eggs, votes for members of local legislatures (initially done through subscriptions), conducts agricultural research for university professorships (later expanding into horticulture), became well-known philanthropists supporting numerous causes throughout central North Carolina before passing away in 1865 at age eighty-six; she died two years later at home surrounded by her family with no will made available to them because she did not have children living at home at that time; her husband survived until 1888 having re-married four times totaling twenty years of widowhood total while also maintaining some significant business interests through various partnerships prior to his death without leaving any direct descendants behind). Morganton is a town in Graham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Morganton is located on the Yadkin River, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) northeast of Raleigh and about 25 miles (40 kilometers) northwest of Chapel Hill. The first place called Morganton was laid out by Captain John Smith in 1770. It was near present-day Durham. He named it for his father-in-law, Colonel John Morgantown. In 1807, Colonel John's three sons wrested control of the county from their fathers and renamed it Graham County after themselves—George Washington Graham, James KenedyGraham and Hugh LawsonGraham. The town site lay at milepost 8 in Graham County according to one source but may have been at milepost 6 or 7 according to another source which states that “Morganton” originated as an Indian name meaning “place where water abounds” because there were many such places along the Yadkin River when Europeans began settlement in this area. In 1847 a group of farmers led by Elisha Wilkinson started a wagon train from Greensboro to Hendersonville with supplies for General Johnston's army fighting in the Mexican–American War In 1865 a post office was established at Morganton; it operated until 1886. At that time its mail reached Raleigh only twice per week so much time had to be saved for more important matters before being sent on its way. In 1926 Morganton experienced its first tornado when two EF5 tornadoes touched down nearby on July 21st & 22nd killing thirteen people and injuring over fifty others On October 9th 1924 Winton Hargrave became the first white person born in Morganton when he arrived from Hendersonville with his family on a Pullman Train Morgantown residents supported World War II efforts by furnishing goods such as gasoline and war materials dealers bought large quantities of food items like flour and sugar during wartime shortages
