Morganton is a town in Harnett County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first policeman gift history in Morganton happened on December 1, 1892 when Wm. A. Cheshire donated a revolver to the town's police department. On July 2, 1923, the town voted to rename its police department the "Morganton Police Department". On November 3, 1930, the city of Morganton dedicated a new Police Station which cost $5,000. The station was built on land that had been donated by Jno Fenton and his wife Annie Fenton. On October 8th of each year since it has been in operation (except for 1984), the Mayor presents an engraved service revolver to the Morganton Police Department as their "Gift from Home".

The town was founded in 1792 by white settlers following the concentration of Creek and Cherokee Indians near what is now Morganton. The first settler in Morganton was Capt. John Morris who moved his family from Burlington, North Carolina to present-day Morganton on December 10, 1792. Captain Morris’s wife died during the move and he himself survived only to become an early settler and promoter of cotton agriculture in the area. By 1800, most of the white residents in Morganton had arrived or were moving westward to new land grants given them by Governor Dinwiddie Tryon in 1802 as part of his efforts to open up portions of North Carolina that had been closed off by British forces during the American Revolution. Morganton became a thriving community with its own schools and churches, as well as a large cotton industry that benefited from favorable transportation conditions and growing demand for cotton goods throughout much of southeastern America. In 1818, when Rutherford County was created from parts of Johnston and Durham Counties, Morganton joined those counties within Wake County which led to increased trade opportunities for both communities while also increasing political power for Morgantown during this time period. During World War II many aircraft manufacturing plants were constructed in nearby Caryburg including Grumman Aircraft Corporation (later McDonnell Douglas) which gave rise to one local Industry nickname “the Aircapital Of The Confederacy” due to its significant presence there until 1984 when it relocated outtown into neighboring Hillsborough County
