Morganton, North Carolina is a town in Bertie County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. Morganton is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Combined Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Morganton was James Wofford in 1838. By 1840, there were only 10 residents living here. In 1851, the town was platted and named for General John C. Buford who had fought in the American Civil War. The first school opened in Morganton on December 12th of that year and taught six students. A post office called Morganton was established in 1857 and remained open until 1924. In 1860, Morganton had a population of 173 people; by 1870 it had grown to 469 with 31 businesses. By 1880, there were 259 people living here and 104 businesses! In 1900 there were 901 people living here; by 1920 it had grown to 1,521 with 247 businesses! In 1930 there were 1,711 people living here; by 1940 it had grown to 2,041 with 277 businesses! During World War II (1939-1945), most of the housing for military personnel being housed at Fort Bragg near Raleigh went up for sale so that Morganton could become an airport site where planes could be unloaded and assembled during peacetime days instead of travelling all around North Carolina which took time and added transportation costs to what already seemed like an expensive undertaking! After the war ended (1945), many companies moved out of North Carolina but not everyone left their homes behind – some used what little property they still owned or rented from other people while others simply vacated their premises entirely because no new business or housing opportunities existed nearby! For example: Stonington Companies closed its doors permanently after moving out of NH over 100 years ago today but has since been reborn as Stonebridge Landing Development Company LLC which manages several properties including a golf course adjacent to Fort Bragg known as “The Golf Course At Fort Bragg” according to their website https://www2a0yc1i3d4l6e9 indicating that Moyenton may have once been one such place back then too 😉 locals continue however to call this spot home now although they often visit The Golf Course At Fort Bragg when they are visiting neighboring towns like Monroe or Elizabethtown which also contain Ft Bragg structures today albeit on smaller scales 😉
