Morganton is a town in Rockingham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. Morganton is part of the Raleigh–Durham–Fayetteville metropolitan area. Morganton was founded in 1852 by Colonel John Broughton and his wife Eliza Cates Broughton as an agricultural village on Lake James. It was named for General William Morgan, who had been killed during the American Civil War. The first post office was established in 1854. The town grew rapidly due to its fertile soil and resources; by 1870 Morganton had a population of 3,000 people. In 1875, Morganton became the county seat of Rockingham County because it had more residents than Durham or Chapel Hill. During World War II, Morganton became one of the largest Allied forces stationed in North Carolina (the others being Fort Bragg in Fayetteville and Camp Lejeune on Long Island). There were over 5,000 military personnel living and working in Morganton at various points throughout the war.

Morganton is a town in Randolph County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Randolph County. The Morganton Railroad passed through the town and left it with its tracks still visible today. Morganton began as an agricultural community known as "Nantahala." In 1836, John C. Campbell, a settler from Scotland who had come to Randolph County in search of new land to farm, purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of what is now Morganton from James Hargrave for $2 per acre. This purchase became nucleus around which a community developed and named after Campbell: Nantahala Station on the Yadkin and Rappahannock Railway. The first store opened in Nantahala Station on October 12, 1836 by Andrew Dickson and his brother-in-law James Hillis. A post office was established at Nantahala Station on November 3, 1836 by Jno Wills Rogers with the name "Morganton." By 1840, Morganton had acquired more than two hundred residents; it included one school district and two Masonic lodges. In 1861–1862 Raleigh lawyer Archibald McLeod donated land north of Morganton for use as a military reservation for men drafted into Confederate service during the American Civil War; this area became known as Camp McDowell because General Robert E Lee encampment there during his campaigns against Northern forces in 1862 and 1863. A mill built near present-day Morganton was used to produce flour until 1865 when mills closed due to Union blockades along the Eastern Seaboard Railroad network created by Abraham Lincoln's administration following the American Civil War. At that time only water mills could be located east of Richmond due to river barriers designed to keep slave trade off Ulysses S Grant's frontiers during Reconstruction hostilities years later called "the hard times". In 1865 Occidental Barber & Grooming Store moved from downtown Raleigh to open at 1020 Main Street where it remains today making Morganton one of few towns in NC without a commercial strip mall or highrise development since those days however occidental has been redeveloped multiple times including 2 buildings next door onto parker road . Since then several small businesses have taken up residence alongparker road including health food store gourmet market natural foods Coopersmiths apothecary & bakery plus 1 large grocery store
