Morganton is the ninth-largest city in Swain County and the second-largest city on the state's Outer Banks. The downtown area is home to many businesses, including Macy's and J.C. Morganton is a town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. Morganton is the seat of Rutherford County. It lies on the Yadkin River and was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1792. Morganton was one of many small settlements established along the Yadkin River during the early years of this region's development as a result of England's attempt to settle backcountry areas between Virginia and Maryland. In 1792, Scottish-Irish settlers arrived in what is now Morganton and began to build a community on the riverbank east of present day Morganton Elementary School. The name "Morgantown" was first given to this settlement by Captain John Seddon who operated an ferry across the Yadkin River near today's downtown Morganton. In 1815, when Rutherford County was created from part of Johnston County, Morgantown became its county seat. At that time it had a population of about 100 people and consisted primarily of farmers who raised corn, wheat, cotton, hogs and poultry. A courthouse (now known asMethodist Episcopal Church) was built in 1824; local mills were soon established including those located at Morgantonucky Creek and Mill Pond; several churches were built; lumber production became important; and brickmaking commenced within two decades or so. By 1860 there were over 1,000 residents living in Morganto
