Mooresville is a small town in North Carolina, located about seventy miles northwest of Greensboro, the state capital. The population was 9,437 at the 2010 census. Mooresville is part of the Raleigh-Durham-Cary Combined Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what became Mooresville was James Moore in 1824. Other early settlers included John Gorman and his family in 1827 and David Caldwell in 1830. In 1835, George Washington Pettit arrived from Georgia with his family and built a log cabin on what is now Pettit Road. Pettit's farm provided food for local farmers until 1865 when railroads came to town and ended production of cotton crops – leaving Mooresville largely agricultural until the 1940s. The first store opened in 1919; today there are several stores and restaurants downtown as well as a library which has been serving the community since 1924. In 1941, Driscoll-Moore Manufacturing Company began operations here to produce radios, TVs, phonographs and other electronics products including those used by NASA during World War II. Today, many of these businesses remain open; however some have closed or been relaunched elsewhere within the community such as Sam's Club which moved its headquarters from Mooresville to Cary after being acquired by Walmart in 2007.
