Mooresville is a town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,927 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. Mooresville's history dates back to 1792 when it was named for Sir John Moore, then an officer in the British Army and later a member of the Continental Congress. The first permanent settler in Mooresville was James Fenton who arrived on February 23, 1792. He and his family were among the first white people to occupy what is now Mooresville Township. In 1807, General Andrew Jackson appointed George Washington as military governor of North Carolina. As commander-in-chief Jackson assigned General John Morden to take control of local affairs in Mooresville township and improve roads and bridges within the township. In 1814, General Morden built a courthouse and jail in what is now downtown Mooresville which served as court house until1841 when it was replaced by the current courthouse building which stands today on Church Street near Interstate 85. One of President George Washington’s two presidential libraries was located in Moneta until 1865 when it moved to Alexandria, Virginia due to fire damage caused by Confederate artillerymen during that year’s Battle of Gettysburg. In 1876,Mooresville became one of nine towns incorporated into Raleigh – making it one of only two towns (the other being Cary) incorporated into Raleigh without taking any territory from neighboring municipalities or counties. In 1907 Mooresville voters passed a resolution proposing that their town be annexed into Durham City effective July 1st but this proposal did not receive enough support from surrounding municipalities so it failed to become reality . On September 15th 1909 Durham city annexed portions of MooresVILLE voting residents down by a large margin with over 60% against annexation however this decision remains controversial because no official record exists documenting why or how Durham city decided not to annexMooreesville . At some point between 1914-1918 a new water main system was installed through moored pipes feeding both local wells and river intakes supplying much largernew subdivisions outside Durham City Limits such as Chapel Hill NC & Hunters Valley NC while also providing more reliable water service for residential areas within boundariesof Durham City limits
In 1727, the area that is now Mooresville was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants. The area became a part of Virginia in 1729, and in 1735, the English claimed the land for themselves. In 1738, General James Moore (1693-1748) was killed when his regiment was ambushed near Mooresville. The battle helped spur on British efforts to gain control of North Carolina.
