Dr. Fennimore became known as one ofthe most successful commercial growers in America for his work supplying premium grades of coffee to many prestigious institutions such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal

That year, General James Wilkinson laid out the town on land that he had purchased from Colonel John Ashe for $2,500. The first store opened in 1831 and the first school was built in 1835. In 1840, John Crampton donated land to form an agricultural college which would become Duke University; however, it only became a university in 1907 when Durham Technical College merged with Duke University. The first resident students began attending Duke University in fall 1841; however, construction of North Carolina State Normal School (now UNC Asheville) did not start until fall 1847 due to funding problems caused bythe American Civil War In 1865, Governor Prentiss appointed Judge Atherton as its first mayor and made MOOREVILLE THE FIRST COMMUNITY IN NORTH CAROLINA TO BE AUTHORIZED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO RECEIVE A TAXATION REVENUE FROM ITS OWN RESIDENTIAL Property
