The Mooresville (NC) Army Garrison was established in 1775 as the Duke of York's Regiment of North Carolina. The 1st Battalion, 9th Regiment, NC Infantry served under General Cornwallis during the American Revolution and were mustered into service on December 12, 1775. The battalion was redesignated as the 8th Regiment, NC Infantry on May 6, 1802. The regiment was reorganized and redesignated as the 2nd Battalion, 9th Regiment, NC Infantry on October 15, 1864. On July 4, 1865 the regiment became part of the 1st Brigade, 3rd Division Confederate States Army under General Johnston. The brigade was disbanded on September 13, 1865. On November 7, 1892 a detachment from Company A from 2d Battalion 9th Regiment NC Infantry left for Puerto Rico with orders to garrison San Juan and other points there until relieved by detachments sent downriver for that purpose by Major-General Beauregard. In 1903 a detachment from Company K from 2d Battalion 9th Regiment NC Infantry left for Cuba to garrison points along the River Camagüey until relieved by detachments sent downriver for that purpose by Major-General Pershing. The Mooresville (NC) Army Garrison is now inactive but remains in existence through its unit designation 2d/9th Cavalry NCS infantry which still serves today in Korea
