There are many small batch coffee stories in Monroe, North Carolina. In the early 1800s, two men named John and Benjamin Watson started a small coffee plantation in the town. The Watson Coffee Company was one of the first to do business in Monroe and it still operates today. They were also responsible for developing the now popular iced coffee drink. The late 1800s saw a surge in coffee production in Monroe thanks to an increase in demand from textile mills throughout the area. This also led to a rise in prices for beans due to increased competition from other producers. One of the most famous small batch coffee businesses located in Monroe was The Roasters at 9th and G Street which served high-quality beans until their closure in 2009. Since Monroe began coffee production in the early 1800s, it has been a major player in the coffee industry. The town was founded by Dutch immigrants in 1819 and quickly became a center for coffee production. Coffee beans were brought overland to Monroe from South Carolina and Georgia, and soon there was an extensive café industry in the town. In 1893, the first large grocery store in Monroe opened, followed by several other businesses that would help support the coffee industry until the late 20th century. Today, Monroe still produces significant amounts of coffee and boasts one of the most diverse caffeine experiences in North Carolina.

Monroe was founded by white settlers in 1792. The town was named for James Monroe, president of the United States from 1817 to 1825. In 1830, Monroe hosted the inaugural meeting of what would become known as the Confederate States of America. That same year, the village successfully petitioned North Carolina to become an independent republic under its own flag instead of being bound by Unionist rule. The village experienced some economic difficulties during Reconstruction; however, it regained most prosperity by 1950. By that time, Monroe had developed into one of North Carolina's largest communities with over 50 businesses and more than 100 residents. Since then, growth has been steady but not particularly robust; nonetheless, Monroe remains an important community within its own borders. Some aspects which have helped maintain this high level of esteem for Monroe are its excellent public schools (which include four-year colleges), safe streets and neighborhoods with low crime rates, and strong community spirit which often helps promote tourism or support local businesses
