The first coffee house in town was called the Coffee House on Market Street. In 1895, Mr. Alfred Mann opened the first grocery store in Monroe and started to sell high-quality coffee from his shop. In 1912, Mrs. John Fenton opened her own grocery store and started to sell coffee as well. By 1930, there were six grocery stores in Monroe with a total of eighty-six specialty stores statewide selling all types of coffee beans from around the world. Today, Monroe is home to more than seventy-five specialty stores that offer high-quality coffee products from all over the US and internationally. Monroe is located southeast of Charlotte and southwest of Durham. The area that now contains Monroe was first settled by English colonists in 1671. In 1824, when it became part of Randolph County, Monroe's population was 1,100; by 1870 it had grown to 2,423 people. The post office opened in 1828 and continued operation until 1865; its name was changed to Monroe in 1889. In 1924, Acts were passed which compelled all farmers to sell their products through local merchants rather than over the internet or at large stores; this began what would become known as "the Great Monte Air Force Base Scandal". On July 10th 1948 an F-105D Thunderchief from Luke Air Force Base crashed into nearby White Sands Lake after losing altitude while flying support for Operation Neptune's Spear military action against South Vietnam. A team led by Colonel Harry Easley recover the wreckage on July 12th 1948 and determined that the cause was a defective airframe control system within the aircraft which caused it to lose altitude and crash into White Sands Lake.
