Monroe is a town in New Hanover County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area. Monroe started as a small settlement on the banks of the Dan River in 1798 by Scots-Irish immigrants who had come to escape religious persecution in Ireland. They named their new community after George Washington, one of their own number. In 1819, Monroe became a parish and then a town when it amalgamated with other towns in New Hanover County. The first white settler in Monroe was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1799 and built his home on what is now Main Street. He also served as justice of the peace and postmaster for the community from 1800 to 1802. Other early settlers included Samuel Henson (1799–1862), John Nicholson (1800–1864), Ebenezer Goodloe (1801–1868), Levi Coffin (1804–1875), Ezekiel Burtis (1807–1892), Nicholas Weems (died 1865) and Job Carver (came later). The first schoolhouse was built in 1802 by Ebenezer Goodloe and Classes were taught by subscription until 1830 when an able-bodied white teacher was hired from nearby Rocky Mount School District #1 at a cost of $3 per year (). A brick school building replaced that structure around 1830/31 though subscription classes continued until 1840/41(). After costs were raised to $10 per year by trustees Vines vowing not to raise taxes again without voter approval, full government funding began provided through local mills & stores which generated substantial revenue (~$60K annual) which fundedchool expenses such as teacher salary & supplies.....In additionto providing modern educational opportunities for locals during this time period much research was done into mapmaking techniques used during surveyor’s calculations thereby enabling us today to better understand our surroundings….. Monroeville Female Academy opened its doors for girls instruction on October 1st “A Residence for Girls”…………….This innovative step forward......... By 1861 only about 20% of residents still subscribed so public schools were no longer necessary....... By 1870 only 2%of residents still subscribed so private schools became an important source of education………….. With increased access to education both boys & girls enjoyed…..Many young women took advantageofthe high school curriculum offered through Ladies Institute established here…….. This institute educated many female teachers throughoutNorth Carolinaduringthistimeperiod……In 1902 Mrs Gertrude Noyes donated land on Church Road west of town cornering Onslow AvenuebecomingMonroePark….Today this park contains more than 25 acres containing baseball diamonds, basketball courts & playground equipment…… Our history goes back even further!
