Monroe is a town in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,959 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1827 by John Monroe and named for him. In 1888, the town name was changed to Monroe after President James K. Polk. The first store in Monroe opened on Main Street in 1827 by John Monroe and his wife (Fannie). They were the only store in the town for many years because there were no roads or railroads then and it took many miles travelling by horseback to get to other places. The first post office opened in 1830 under the name of Bigelowville because one of its owners had an estate called Bigelow near present-day Monroe. In 1892, General Order No. 9 ordered all businesses within Henderson County to close due to lack of food supplies during Reconstruction and efforts by Congress not to give financial assistance to former Confederate governments until they were reorganized as states again. Many stores closed including John Monroe's Store which reopened that same day with new ownership, but failed to make a profit due to low demand from customers who could not afford food rationing during that time period In 1925, when Henderson County became a county Seat following its creation from parts of Johnston and Union Counties, business conditions improved enough so that the original order not only reopened but also made profits for both individuals and businesses once again When Henderson County merged into Mecklenburg County in 1907, most of what remained of small businesses closed including John Monroe's Store; however, it reopened with new management two years later under new name "Monroe News". It continued being published until 1970 when it merged with another local paper company forming "The Clarion-Ledger" now known as The Charlotte Observer

The city is now located in Gastonia County and has a population of over 100,000 people. Monroe was originally called New Kent County because its founders were from Virginia. The name change came about because of the American Revolution. New Kent county had been divided between North Carolina and Virginia after the war, and as a result, many Virginians moved to North Carolina to find new opportunities. The Monroes were among these pioneers and they decided to move their family there because they saw an opportunity for growth in this new state. They arrived in 1775 and founded what is now Monroe on Catawba River near modern-day Gastonia. They soon realized that they would need more than just land to build a town; they also needed water resources since the catawba river provided no drinking water at that time. So they started building infrastructure such as wells, dams, bridges, roads, etc., which continue to be important today! Monroe continued growing rapidly during the 1800s thanks to its close proximity to Charlotte and its successful commerce industry. In 1868 it became a city when Raleigh annexed it into the city limits of Raleigh minor league baseball team owner Wirt Hamer donated $50K towards creating an arena for the team’s first season (the present-day ACC Athletics Center). After years of struggle with funding shortages caused by World War II – due largely to rationing – Monroe finally reached profitability in 1951 despite experiencing some decline throughout much of that decade due largely to Ulysses S Grant’s “War Departmentarianism” policy (which discouraged military spending) which slashed federal funds available for community development projects across America beginning with Raleigh during his presidency ). Today's economy depends upon education, healthcare & technology while overall spending remains restrained by downtown redevelopment restrictions
Monroe was founded in 1785 by John Moncrief and his wife, the former Elizabeth Wirt. The town was named for General James Monroe, who served as president during the American Revolution. The first post office in Monroe opened in 1814. In 1840, Monroe became an independent county within Randolph County. In 1871, Monroe merged with Randolph County to form Vance County.
