Monroe is a town in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Cumberland River. The population was 9,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville–Buncombe County, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Monroe was founded in 1792 and named for James Monroe, who served as president of the United States from 1829 to 1837 and as secretary of state under President Andrew Jackson. The town has a rich history dating back to its founding days when it was called "New Monroeville." The first settler in what would become Monroe was John Pendleton, who arrived in 1792. In 1830, James Monroe became the 4th President of the United States and moved his household from New York City to Charlotte with his family for health reasons before he took office on January 20th 1830 Monroe's strategic location along both sides of the Cumberland River made it an early center for commerce and transportation. By 1800, there were several stores, two tanneries, four livery stables, three insurance companies and one bank in operation in Monroe In 1829-30 James Dallimore built a ferry crossing over Peachtree Creek near present day Tryonville so settlers could reach their plantations further upriver without having to go through downtown Asheville or travel downriver on horseback According to local historian Wanda Crouch: "Dallimore's Ferry...helped people move goods between Cherokee Bluff (now Tryonville) upstream on the mountains and areas now known as Rutherfordton (near Hendersonville), Orangeburg County (now Gastonia) downstream on Peachtree Creek below Sandy Hook [near Knoxville], Surry County [currently Elizabethtown], Moore County [currently Hickory] eastward across Tellico Bayou into Vance County [currently Onslow]". This bridge facilitated trade between plantations upriver and those closer to civilization downriver which helped support rapid economic growth throughout much of southeastern North Carolina during this time period

Monroe was founded in 1771 by John Monroe, a Revolutionary War veteran and delegate to the North Carolina General Assembly. The town grew rapidly during the 1800s as agriculture became an important part of the local economy. In 1814, Monroe was renamed for James K. Polk, who had been president at the time of its founding. By 1870, Monroe had a population of around 1,500 residents and was an important center for trade and transportation on the lower Cumberland River. The town declined during the late 19th century as new towns were built in its vicinity. In 1950, Monroe was made an incorporated city by ordinance. It has since experienced significant growth and development since then, becoming one of North Carolina's most vibrant communities.
