The Coast Guard has been in operation in Monroe, North Carolina since 1920. The first coast guard station was established on the western side of town and the present facility is located on the eastern side. In that time, the Coast Guard has played an important role in many aspects of local and regional life. The Coast Guard Station was originally called the Marine Barracks and was located at the intersection of US Highway 1 and US Highway 601. In 1976, the name of the station was changed to Headquarters and Service Squadron One (HS1). In 2006, Headquarters and Service Squadron Two (HS2) were added to Headquarters and Service Squadron One (HS1). Today, Headquarters and Service Squadron One is responsible for all aspects of harbor patrol operations in Monroe. HS1 also provides security for the UN Ambassador's Office in Monroe as well as other public events in town.
Monroe is a small town in North Carolina. The population was 5,713 at the 2010 census. It is located in McDowell County. Monroe is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. The area now known as Monroe was first settled by European settlers in 1785. The name derives from the Cherokee word "mooney" which means "a place where cotton can be grown." In 1824, when McDowell County was formed from parts of Surry and Graham Counties, Monroe became its seat and remained so until 1907. As a result of its prominence as a county seat, it also served as an important commercial center for much of eastern North Carolina during the late 19th century and early 20th century. In 1902, Monroe passed legislation designating November 3rd as National Cotton Day to commemorate this event and other aspects of cotton production in the county. The celebration has been held every year since then. During World War II, Monroe played a key role in the defense of North Carolina by providing food and munitions to allied forces fighting in Europe. Beginning in 1943, the United StatesArmy's 4th Infantry Division headquartered at Camp Dickerson here began using what would become known as "Monroe Field" for training exercises that eventually led to Operation Dragoon (1944). Additionally, many local businesses participated in supplying goods essential to military operations such as ammunition and gasoline to aircraft carriers moored off Cape Hatteras Island offshore; these activities generated significant tax revenue for the town coffers. As hostilities ended and peace returned to North Carolina after more than six years of conflict, General Motors announced plans to build a new plant on Wilson Boulevard just outside town limits-this announcement sparked intense protest from residents who viewed it not only as an economic development but also an invasion of their personal space! Although initial construction did not begin until 1984-the plant would ultimately employ over 1,700 people-monroe's economy soared followingGM's decision; resulting in increased taxes paid by citizens along with new infrastructure projects such as a bypass road connecting town with neighboring townships
