When Monroe was established in 1853, it was a small community of farmers and hunters. The area now known as Monroe was first settled by Scotch-Irish immigrants in the early 1800s. The Scots-Irish were a hard working and devout group who built churches, schools and businesses in their new home. Over time, other groups such as Germans, Italians and African Americans also moved into the area. In 1924, Monroe became the first municipality in North Carolina to receive government assistance for economic development. This assistance consisted of funding for local businesses to expand their operations and hire more employees. In 1938, Monroe industrial plant closed due to lack of demand from World War II military production. However, the town still experienced continued growth during the war years with population growth totaling over 100% between 1945 and 1947! After the war ended, many businesses decided that they would like to stay open while they awaited new opportunities or found new homes elsewhere. Some companies such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Coca Cola Company and Bethlehem Steel Corporation stayed open while others closed shop including Woolworth’s Department Store which had been located in Monroe since 1886! Monroe experienced another period of growth starting around 1960 when it became an important center for textile manufacturing with companies such as JCPenney & Co., Allied Signal (now Verizon) and Shell Shipping Corporation operating within its boundaries. It wasn’t until after 9/11 that things started to change in downtown Monroe although some locally owned businesses did continue trading even though their buildings were destroyed! Since then there has been a large effort by Mayor John Fenton to revitalize downtown Monroe with a number of initiatives including renovation of several blocks of downtown business district; installation of public art along streetscape; establishment of an art gallery on Main Street ; creation of antique mall adjacent to Community Christian School; donation from businessman Don Stephens Sr.; construction of two high-rise apartments above historic hotels; erection of two large glass doors at old White House Hotel which now houses Artspace Montclair The current renaissance is being spearheaded by Mayor Fenton’s office with support from Friends Committee on Civil Rights (FCRC), zoning ordinances committee chairman Skip Sellers III (D-Monroe), City Councilman Randy Hargrave (R-Monroe)and Planning Commission member Erik Kapp (D-Montgomery). The goal is bring back economic vitality to downtown Monroe through increased use of arts venues, job training programs AND mixed uses – all designed to create community value rather than just generate wealth!

The Monroe Coffee Company was founded in 1902 by John and Katherine Shields. The company became a major player in the coffee industry, producing some of the earliest and most popular artisanal coffees in North Carolina. The Shields family continued to operate the company until its closure in 1984.
Monroe is a small town located in Henderson County, North Carolina. The population was 3,816 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Monroe is known for its orange growing industry and its annual Peach festival. The first white person to live in Monroe was James Hargrave in 1785. In 1831, John Flemming built the first store in Monroe and it remains one of the most popular tourist destinations today. The town was incorporated on February 10, 1892. Monroe suffered during World War I due to bombing raids by Japanese planes and night airstrikes by USAAF bombers. However, some believe that this attack helped spur local business growth which has kept the community thriving since then. Since 1960, Monroe has been home to the James Tatum Museum of Art which features works from American art history from Pre-Raphaelite through modern times. Additionally, there are several restaurants and bars available within walking distance of downtown as well as a library with a wide variety of books covering all aspects of culture and history in Monroe area
The coffee industry has been around for centuries, and the first recorded mention of coffee came in Sumer. Coffee was mentioned by the ancient Egyptians in their tombs as one of the many items they buried with their king. In Ancient Greece, coffee was also used as an article of trade. The first European to learn about coffee and its potential benefits was Giovanni Battista del Cairola, a Florentine trader who journeyed to India in search of new market opportunities. He brought back beans from India that he brewed and drank himself. The Indian traders were the first to experiment with roasting coffee beans. They did this so that they could preserve the flavor and aroma of the beans while roasted. In 1795, Dutchman Johannes Gutenberg invented movable type printing press which allowed books to be printed without having to leave their homes or rely on others to carry them off-shore. This made it possible for people throughout Europe and Asia to read religious scriptures, news articles, maps, etc., without ever havingto leave their homes or cities! This technological breakthrough is credited with helping start what is now known as civilization!

The area around Monroe experienced rapid growth during World War II as thousands of troops were stationed there during the war effort. The city experienced significant expansion after World War II with the construction of new roads and businesses including an airport and several shopping malls. After the war, Monroe experienced another period of growth thanks to its status as a commercial center and its role as a destination for tourists visiting NC State University and other nearby attractions. However, economic challenges have dogged Moncrieffe throughout recent decades; most recently they include widespread blighting of downtown streets which has led to decreased business activity and increased crime rates
