The United States Army National Guard was established in 1775 as the Continental Army. The first unit of the National Guard was organized in Monroe, North Carolina on November 8, 1776. On December 12, 1776, General George Washington announced that all male citizens of Virginia were mustered into the Continental Army and must go to New York to serve under his command. In October 1861, North Carolina became part of Confederate States of America and its units began serving in the Confederacy. In 1865, after the Union army lost the Battle of Appomattox Court House, most Confederate officers surrendered to Union forces and many county governments fell within Union control. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what became Monroe was John Smith in 1792. In 1819, James Monroe purchased 1/2 mile (500 m) of good land from Nathaniel Wade for $1 per acre (0.50 roentgen). He named it "Monroe" after his father-in-law and fellow Virginian James Monroe, 3rd President of the United States and brother to President George Washington. In 1830, Daniel Boone arrived in what became Monroe with his family from Kentucky and built a cabin on a hill just east of present day Monroeville Cemetery. There he farmed until 1838 when he removed to Fort Loudoun on Roanoke Island where he began to build an outfitter's store which would become one of the most important businesses in that early community. In 1840, he married Anne Carr and founded the first Baptist church in this area – Trinity Baptist Church still stands today as one of Monroe's most impressive landmarks. In 1845, Representative David Cranch traveled through Gates County on his way to Pittsburg Landing in support of General Andrew Jackson during the Mexican–American War; upon reaching Monroeville he visited Carr's business and then took dinner at Carr's home before staying at Fort Loudoun for two nights while supplies were transported overland from Virginia to Mexico City under cover of darkness. It was here that Congressman Cranch met future Vice President James Polk who said "I never saw anyone so interested or so ardent about politics". On July 4th 1846 while attending a private function at Fort Loudoun by General Zachary Taylor celebrating Ulysses S Grant's victory over Mexico City forces under Santa Anna Samuel Adams called for Lee’s surrender “This will be their Fourth Now we are masters here” but no answer came back so Adams assumedLee had been captured or killed and returned to Philadelphia
