Mint Hill is a small town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham–Cary Combined Statistical Area. Mint Hill is located on the eastern edge of the Piedmont region and straddles several streams that flow into the Yadkin River. The village of Mint Hill was laid out in 1794 by Colonel John Sevier as part of an effort to improve communications between New Bern and Charlotte. Colonel Sevier renamed his new community "Mint Hill" after Philadelphia's First Mayor, James street (now Independence Avenue). The first post office at Mint Hill opened in 1802. In 1812, a school was built on what is now East Main Street and it became known as "Mint Hill Academy." In 1826, Rev. Ebenezer Stiles established what is now " Methodist Episcopal Church". By 1830, there were about 350 people living in Mint Hill. On December 12, 1831, citizens voted to incorporate as a town under the name of Durham County; however this vote never took place because it conflicted with nearby Carytown which had already been incorporated as a town on October 5th that same year by similar resolution from residents. Mint Hill is a small town in Wake County, North Carolina, United States. The town was founded in 1799 by Captain James Robertson and his family after they left Charlotte, North Carolina. The original settlers were Scots-Irish immigrants. Mint Hill has a population of about 1,500 people today. Mint Hill is located on the banks of the Yadkin River, northeast of Raleigh. It consists of a single block of commercial buildings along South Tryon Street and one acre (0.4 hectare) of rural land north of that corridor. mint hill was originally named for Mount Royal in Scotland because the new community was near where that mountain was located at the time it was founded. In 1892, Mint Hill relocated to its current site following flooding which destroyed most of the previous village location. The first store on South Tryon Street opened in 1799 and became known as "Robertsons' Store". A post office operated here from 1800 until 1827; it then moved to what is now Main Street. The first doctor in this area was Drury John Fenton who arrived in 1798 and practiced here until 1802 when he moved to Chapel Hill. In 1828, Mint Hill had two churches: First Presbyterian (now Baptist) and second Methodist (now Methodist Episcopal). In 1865, Mint Hill had its first school - East High School - which served grades 7 through 12 before being replaced by present day East Elementary School in 1922 In 1903, citizens voted to name their new town after General Robert E Lee who had died four years earlier while commanding Confederate forces during the Battle of Gettysburg south of Rutherfordton West Virginia . From 1926 to 1928 coins were struck commemoratingieth anniversary events associated with Confederate service including battles at Petersburg and Williamsburg Missouri It wasn't until 1970 when residents successfully lobbied for a downtown business district adjacent to their high school that MintHill began expanding into retail areas beyond just its core commercial district today called "The Triangle" consisting of three blocks bounded by University Drive (north), Tryon Street (east), and Chapel Road (south). Today much older businesses have been closed or vacated but many others remain such as The Olde Fashioned Bakery & Tavern w/ Pantry inside UNC Durham's Carter Center for Performing Arts and several other iconic vintage shops around campus including one run by Antique Rdshow - an international antique showmen
