It was used to produce ammunition for the American army during World War I. After the war, it became an armament storage and distribution center for the United States government. The Mint Hill Confederate Infantry Regiment was the first regiment of Confederate soldiers raised in North Carolina. The unit was organized on February 12, 1861, and mustered into service on March 4th. The regiment fought in the Battle of Chapin's Mill on April 6th, 1861. In the battle, the Mint Hill Confederate Infantry Regiment lost three officers and sixty-six men killed or mortally wounded. They also lost four horses and five cannon. The regiment then served at the Battle of Second Bull Run on October 29th, 1861. At this battle, they lost two officers and twenty-four men killed or mortally wounded. They also captured a Union artillery piece. The regiment then served in the Transylvania Campaign from November 14 to December 9th, 1861. The regiment suffered six officers and ninety-six men killed or mortally wounded during this campaign. For its services during these campaigns, the Mint Hill Confederate Infantry Regiment was given a silver coin by Governor Jepson
Mint Hill is a small town in Durham County, North Carolina, located on the banks of the Yadkin River. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Mint Hill were French traders in 1664. In 1794, General James Wilkinson explored and named it for Mount Royal in British Columbia. The name was shortened to Mint Hill by 1800 because so few people lived there that coins could not be used to measure distances. The first mint in America opened here in 1814. By 1830, settlers had created a Ring Road around the town and built several homes on high ground near what is now downtown Mint Hill for economic development purposes only; these residents did not live within the limits of mint hill proper. The last time an American coinage was produced here was around 1907-1908 when silver coins were put into circulation as part of a New Deal program with Roosevelt's New Frontier policies at work. At this time also, most local businesses closed up shop due to lack of customers or new competition from other towns outside Durham County which had replaced rural areas with larger cities during this time period.. It should be noted that everything mentioned up until 1908 took place outside of what is now known as downtown Mint Hill - just east of I-85 and north of US 21W - making it one big dusty parking lot!
