It grew rapidly during the early years of the 20th century due to its location on country that had been purchased from Native Americans by General James Longstreet and others on behalf of the Confederate States of America. In 1916 Mebane became an incorporated city under state law and it remained an unincorporated village until 1978 when it became part of Randolph County. The first post office in Mebane was established in 1872. The name change came about because many residents were confused with Me Bane, Scotland which was their original source for water supply (the creek running through town still bears this name). Mebane has experienced some significant growth over the years; its population peaked at 14,877 in 1940 and has since declined modestly to 9,581 as of 2010. This decline is largely attributed to two factors: 1) loss of jobs in nearby Durham due to World War II military production shutdowns; and 2) demography changes such as more people moving into larger cities after 1970s suburbanization began throughout much of eastern North Carolina.
