Mebane is located on I-40 and U.S. 421 north of Raleigh and east of Apex. Mebane has a total area of , all land. At the time of its incorporation as a town in 1885, it had a population of about 350 people living in 28 homes with an average size for a family of six adults and four children under the age of ten (the median age was 16 years). The first white settler in what is now Mebane was James Suggs who came to patent 7 acres (2 hectares) on which he built his home in 1827. Headed by storekeeper John Capps and attorney Andrew Kirkpatrick Sr., prior to 1830 there were only two stores in Caldwell County: one operated by Judge Robert Johnston and another by Nathaniel Wright (brothers-in-law of Judge Johnston). In 1835, Wm Hemsley bought 6 acres (2 hectares) within what is now Mebane from James Suggs for $550 sterling or $10 per acre ($ ). In 1865 Mebane's first post office opened with mail delivery from Raleigh; this service ceased after postal reform abolished local letter carriers throughout most southern states in 1893 effective with the American Standard Time zone (). By 1870 there were thirteen houses scattered among three large lots totaling . This small landowning minority controlled every aspect of civic life until World War II when they ceded their power to African Americans through integration politics culminating with passage Brown v Board Of Education . Ida Bogle Whiteside became president pro tempore and First Lady Jackie Wilson took over leadership duties upon her husband's death in 1969. Mrs. Whiteside continued as president pro tempore into the late 1990s until her retirement due to health reasons; she remainsactively involved with community affairs including serving on several boards since then including that for historical research into African American history at UNC Chapel Hill’s Fayetteville Campus
