The community was founded in 1892 and named after General James Matthews, who served as a colonel in the Confederate army during the American Revolution. Matthews had been mayor of Gaston County for thirty years when he died in 1925. In 1865, General James Matthews married local girl Fannie White. They had two children before she died in 1896. General Matthews' son John also married a local girl and they had one child before he died in 1924. After General James Matthews death, his widow Fannie took over running the community until her death in 1957. At that time, the town was passed down to their daughter Lula who continued to run it until her death in 1984. In 1987, Lula's grandson Donnie bought the property from Lula's sister and continues to run it as an independent business now known as Donny's Diner which has been open for over fifty years

After more than 50 years of growth and progressivism at Matthews, it officially became a city on November 3rd, 1998 when voters passed Measure C which renamed the city after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of its most high- profile civic leaders during that time period
