Matthews is a town in Pike County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. Matthews was founded in 1838 by Scots-Irish immigrants landowning farmers and their families. Newsome Mills, a cotton gin andibaba plant complex near Matthews, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Matthews is located in the southeastern corner of Pike County at (35.760914 -87.122714). It is bordered to the south by Gastonia and to the west by Rocky Mount. The town takes its name from James Matthews, an early settler who migrated from Ireland in 1838. According to one source, Matthews began as "a small family farmstead scattered along a creek that flowed through what is now downtown Matthews." According to another source, "Matthews" derives its name from Colonel James Mclntyre Williamson (1807-1892), an agent for the United States Land Office who negotiated land grants for Scotch-Irish settlers in what are now Buncombe and Rutherford counties during the 1830s and 1840s. Williamson's heirs donated large blocks of land including part of today's central business district toMMathias Township trustees in 1865; this donation has been cited as one factor leading to increased development around town during ensuing decades." Despite this clarification, most sources agree that Matthewstown proper began developing around Newsome Mills – which functioned as a single largest cotton gin operated between 1838 and 1862 – when other local businesses closed down or were relocated due to competition from larger mills farther east or west across Iredell Countylines*. Today, downtown Matthews includes shops/stores/cafés/bars/restaurants/etc., two parks (*One features an impressive amount of recycled glass recovered from old window frames!), two churches (+The First Baptist Church founded in 1890*, plus Messiah Lutheran Church which opened up shop in 1978), two public school districts (-Shaw Chapel Elementary School District No 1 & +Rocky Mount Elementary School District No 2*) *And though many residents still commute into neighboring Gastonia or Rocky Mount for jobs (and there continue to be various retail businesses adjacent thereto), much importantly since mill closures* Downtown Matthews has experienced significant enhancements such as new infrastructure like streetscape improvements thanks both to MASTER Plans funding†(*see also †below) AND private donors‡(*see also Appendix A)), making it easier for locals AND visitors alike TO enjoy all that Downtown Matthews has to offer!
