The Matthews, North Carolina Army National Guard has a rich military history dating back to the Revolutionary War. The present-day army is made up of nearly 9,000 soldiers and airmen who serve in more than 120 units across the state. The first unit raised in Matthews was the 1st Regiment of Foot Infantry in 1775. The regiment served under George Washington during the Revolution and later fought against British forces in the American Civil War. In 1864, the 1st Regiment of Foot Infantry was redesignated as the 2nd Regiment of North Carolina Volunteers and saw action at Manassas Junction and Battle of Gettysburg. In 1903, an act was passed by Congress authorizing formation of a state guard squadron at Matthews. On April 15, 1903, Simmons Company C (later called Battery A) became part of this squadron and patrolled the waters around Matthews until it disbanded on July 1, 1943. On September 3, 1942, World War II began with Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. The United States responded with Operation USMCR which led to America's entry into World War II. On December 7th Station Hospital #1 at Mathers Field Hospital (present day Brown Chapel Cemetery) was established as a field hospital for Use by Air Force Units serving in Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns; its initial patients were Japanese civilians interned during World War II who had been caught between Japan's military--and then Nazi Germany's--gangsrape effort against Allied Forces troops stationed on Iwo Jima and Okinawa Island. The hospital operated from December 7th through January 8th 1945; following which it converted to an Australian Army Base Hospital known as “HMAS Canberra” until its dedication by Vice Admiral Harry S Truman on February 10th 1951 as Ulysses S Grant Presidential Library & Museum facility). As America entered World War II there were concerns that Nazi Germany might try to invade America using her allies - Britain didn't want any help from Hitler so she started beefing up her own defenses while also building up resources for potential war with Russia should things get bad with Germany... so when America joined WWI there were no active army units or militias left so people started packing their bags or moving out west to join either service if they could! Funny enough all these guys who are now fighting overseas did it without any formal training...the only way you can fight in a real war is if you're actually drafted into something! So when America announced she'd be joining WWII everyone who wasn't already fighting got excited because now they could finally become something other than just farmers etc...!! So what does that mean for us today? Matthews is a small town in North Carolina, located on the edge of the Pee Dee River. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. Matthews is home to many businesses and institutions including Duke University, UNC Chapel Hill, and the Matthews Museum of Art. One of Matthews' most well-known residents is Reverend Billy Graham. Graham spent his formative years here and was educated at nearby Surry County Schools before attending Duke University where he earned a degree in theology in 1949. After leaving Duke, Graham served as an pastor for several churches in North Carolina before moving to South Korea in 1955 to help found an evangelical church there. In 1961,Graham returned to North Carolina and began serving as pastor of First Baptist Church in Matthews. He retired from his position there in 1981 but continued to preach until his death at 92 years old on December 15th, 1998. Matthews also has a significant history within NASCAR. Davey Allison won two races here during his career (the first being a win at Charlotte Speedway on March 1st, 1973) while Al Unser Jr., Darrell Waltrip and Rick Mears all made multiple trips here throughout their careers while driving for various teams (including Hendrick Motorsports). Additionally, Tony Stewart has made three visits here during his career - one during the Nationwide Series season opener at Road Atlanta Raceway on October 18th 2003; another on November 8th 2006 when he won the pole for the Coca Cola 600; and finally this past May when he came away with the victory over Matt Kenseth after starting last place

John Matthews was born in 1752 in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. He came to America soon after independence from Great Britain were granted on July 4, 1776. John Matthews fought in the American Revolution as a captain with the 7th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers. After the war, he settled in what is now Matthews County, North Carolina, where he founded the first store and built a home. In 1814, he purchased 1,000 acres of land northeast of present-day Asheville for $5 per acre. This donation helped make Asheville one of the leading cities in North Carolina. Matthews died at age 96 on October 15, 1892, leaving behind an impressive legacy that continues to be appreciated today. His donations to local charities and his support for education have been significant factors in keeping Asheville alive as an vibrant cityscape today.
