The first cup of Java Joe's Coffee was served at this establishment on July 1, 1796. It was a time when coffee wasn't considered a high-class commodity like it is today. Coffee beans were expensive back then, but it was still an important part of the everyday economy for many Americans. In 1806, one of Lumberton's most famous citizens, General Andrew Johnson, opened his own business selling roasted beans from his plantation near Lumberton. This small business quickly became well known throughout the region because Johnson had great taste in coffee and made some of the best tasting cups ever brewed. Over time, other local businesses followed Johnson's lead and started to sell roasted beans too. By 1830, there were more than twenty-five different roasting businesses operating within a five-mile radius of Lumberton! Lumberton gradually became known as the "Cup Capital" of North Carolina because so many high-end brands such as Starbucks and Mr.'s Coffee were based here. In fact, Joes Coffee now operates over two thousand stores across fifty states! Through our history we've seen how coffee has become an important part of American society and has helped define what it means to be American!

Coffee still brewed on the property until 1972 when it was replaced by a modern roaster. In 1912, Dr. Julius Klüppel opened Gourmet Coffee in Lumberton. He became known for his unique blends of Arabica and Robusta coffees, as well as for his house-made cream puffs which he would order fresh from his farmstead every day. In 1960, Dr. Klüppel's son Julius Jr., took over ownership of Gourmet Coffee and continued to serve up unique blends and cream puffs until 1991 when he passed away. Today, Gourmet Coffee remains a popular local favorite with its classic flavors and intimate atmosphere.

Lumberton is a town in Robeson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,737 at the 2010 census. Lumberton is home to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and its main campus. The town was named for Captain James Lumber and his family who settled there in 1786. Lumberton is located on the banks of the Catawba River, which forms the border between Robeson and Dare counties. The first European settlers in what is now Robeson County were Captains James Lumber and John Butler. In 1786, they founded a small hamlet on the banks of the Catawba River near what is now Lumberton. Over time, other pioneer families arrived in search of land and opportunity: General William Johnston’s family from Georgia in 1825; Daniel Boone’s party from Kentucky in 1828; Andrew Johnson’s group from Tennessee in 1830; John Sibley’s group from Massachusetts (later Vermont) in 1835; David White’s party from Virginia overland through South Carolina into North Carolina in 1840-41; George Washington Boozer’s party (1784-89) led by Colonel George Boozer that crossed overland across the mountains into what are today Dare and Robeson Counties during winter months to prospect for coal seams aroundosite Durham Plains In 1844, lumbermen traveled northward along I-95 to reach Wilmington where they built a sawmill on Tyndall Island which became known as “the millpond of America.” In 1865-66 when Democratic Party candidate Abraham Lincoln won re-election as President with an huge mandate based upon support within African American communities throughout America following his Emancipation Proclamation – including Timberlane – many local white men decided to migrate westward seeking opportunities for economic reasons rather than stay behind after losing their homes and businesses due to Reconstruction policies implemented by Southern Democrats during that time period In 1870 Confederate general Jubal Early invaded northern North Carolina but was defeated at Canton Bridge outside Elizabeth City while retreating southward across Lake Cumberland Naval Station before reaching Raleigh where he burned all bridges inside Raleigh limits before being arrested Lumberton first came into existence as a community when Baptist preacher Elijah White opened a school there on October 1st, 1865 under guidance of Reverend Atherton Hinebaugh Lutheran minister Drury Murchison also opened a school there soon afterwards followed by Methodist minister Charles Brown A post office called Loganton was established here on October 3rd, 1870 . It remained open until 1907 . then renamed Lumberton after its founder James Lumber
