Lumberton is a town in Lenoir County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 8,028 at the 2010 census. Lumberton is the county seat of Lenoir County. Lumberton is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Lumberton was John Wesley Moody in 1824. In 1827, Daniel Boone and his party arrived here to survey the area for a new home and found an open space that would become Loganton Road today. A year later, they built a cabin on this spot, which still stands as a landmark west of town. In 1830-31 David Lane built one of North Carolina's first log churches and named it after himself – Loganton Methodist Episcopal Church Today. In 1835-36 General James Longstreet led an American army against Andrew Johnson's Confederate forces during the Battle of Fort Fisher and lost many men including Longstreet's brother-in-law Major General Thomas Steedman (later Governor of North Carolina) and several key officers such as Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest (founder of ForrestCorp). In response to this loss, President Andrew Johnson ordered Union Major General Ulysses S. Grant to march on Camp Douglas outside of Wilmington to relieve Little Rock before he moved on into northern Alabama where he destroyed most all infrastructure around Mobile Bayou - effectively rendering that port unusable for shipping by sea for months afterwards - giving Confederate Admiral cotton traders hope their blockade could hold indefinitely until war could be declared again Lumberton began its growth when post office construction began here in1848 by mail carrier Wm Houstoun with help from local lumbermen who had seen potential profits in transporting logs across state lines through surcharges levied on western states' railroads going into those same states; Surplus value from these operations was used to build other buildings locally including Post Office #2 which still stands today (renovated 2007). Goods manufactured within town limits started being marketed outside early 1850s when sawmill operators decided switch from hand sawing hardwood directly onto railroad rails to get ahead of transportation costs associated withcartloads or mules pulling sledges filled with long boards whose width varied anywhere from 2" up to 12". It was named for General David Lumber, who had purchased 2,500 acres (10 km2) of land from the Cherokee Nation in 1824. The first store opened in 1829 and lumber became one of the town's mainstay industries. In 1865 Lumberton became an incorporated community with a Mayor/Council form of government under which it operated as an unincorporated community until 1978 when it became a city with its own City Council form of government The original downtown buildings were replaced by new construction beginning around 1960 and continuing through the late 1990s and into this century. Most recently, there has been significant redevelopment taking place near Interstate 85 including several high-rise apartment towers and hotels.
