In 1836, Governor Tryon renamed Lumberton "Newbern" in honor of President Andrew Johnson. Lumberton is located at 36°48′N 85°10′W / 36.923 N 85.188 W and its elevation is 592 feet (158 m). According to the 2010 census, the population density was 839 people per square mile (291/km²). Lumberton is a town in Carteret County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,695 at the 2010 census. Lumberton had been a part of the Union since it seceded from Virginia on April 12, 1861. The town was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived in 1814 and named it after their home county of Scotland. The first settler in what is now Lumberton was John McMillin. He and his family came overland from Scotland in 1814 and built a cabin on the present site of Lumberton around 1820. In 1830, McMillin's grandson James McMillin gave up land to establish a lumber business that would remain in operation until 1957. Lumberton experienced its heyday during the late 19th century when much of its industry revolved around its production of hardwood for furniture, cabinets, doors, and other household items. Many famous people were born or grew up here including author Fannie Flagg (1872-1957), basketball player Julius Erving (1948-2011), singer Aretha Franklin (1934-2012), and NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon (1970-present). In 2006, Lumberton became an official city within Carteret County after voters passed Measure 1 which designated the town as an entity unto itself with all the powers associated with municipal governments within Carteret County – including tax collection, zoning authority, public works management and infrastructure development etc.– without having to go through the lengthy process that typically goes along with being granted city status. With this designation came new responsibilities such as police service, trash collection and street maintenance which had previously fallen under the jurisdiction ofCarteret County Sheriff’s Department or other local government officials. Today’s residents continue to benefit from their close relationship with both Carteret County government as well as neighboring communities such as Rocky Mount and Monroe which have all seen growth over recent years due to ample job opportunities available in nearby industries such as manufacturing/ construction/ retail/information technology/ healthcare etc..
