Lumberton is a town located in Rutherford County, North Carolina. The population was 25,853 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Rutherford County and the largest city in the county by size. Lumberton is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa) with warm days and cool nights, typical of southeastern North Carolina. The first permanent settler in Lumberton was James Robertson who arrived in 1824 from Scotland. He built a shop on Cemetery Road and named it Robertson's Store after himself and his brother-in-law, James Dickson. By 1830, several other Scotsmen had founded similar towns in eastern Rutherford County including Easley (1830), Cross Keys (1832), Emmonsville (1835), Monroe (1836), Pittsboro (1841), Rocky Mount (1844), Uniontown (1847). The post office called Lumberton "Newburgh" until 1846 when it changed to its present name because of local support for secession fromthe United States during the American Revolution. In 1870, two voting clubs were organized; one for white men only and one for colored men only. A blacksmith shop opened in 1878 followed by a bakery and grocery store soon afterward. The first telephone line was Linesville Telephone Company reached here on October 15th 1889 by Edwin Hokey from Linesville just outside of Lumberton limits along US 301/NC 119W between Hendersonville and Radcliff Springs

Lumberton is a city in and the county seat of Orange County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 6,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. Lumberton was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1811 on the edge of what is now Orange County. The town grew rapidly during the antebellum period as lumber mills were developed and sawmills were erected along the Catawba River. By 1850, Lumberton had reached its peak as a manufacturing center with industries including wagonry, buggy making, shipbuilding and cooperage. However, during the Civil War Lumberton became an important Confederate stronghold due to its strategic location on Route 13 near Wilmington and its military importance as a rail junction for Confederate supplies moving into Northern Virginia. In 1865, following Union victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, many of Lumberton's industry facilities were destroyed or converted to munitions works. Today much of Lumberton's history remains buried beneath century-old buildings and infrastructure that has been hard to demolish because it is owned by banks and other businesses who have refused to sell or give away any artifacts or records relating to their past.
The community of Lumberton began as a small hamlet on the banks of the Catawba River in 1835. By 1860, Lumberton had grown to a town with a population of over 1,000 people. The town was renamed after General Marion Wood, who fought in the American Civil War and later served as Mayor of Lumberton. In 1925, Lumberton became an incorporated municipality and has sincegrown into one of the most vibrant communities in North Carolina.
