The first roasting of coffee was done by James A. McAffee and his Sons on a small scale in 1865. The business grew rapidly and McCann & Son purchased McAffee's assets in 1867. By 1875, the company had Roasting & Coffee Shops operating throughout the Carolinas. The key to success for McCann & Son was their dedication to quality control and their focus on providing customer service that appealed to both customers and employees alike. They developed an innovative system for measuring beans - this led to improved product quality and increased profits. In 1898, they merged with two other companies to form the United States Coffee Company (USCO). This new company became one of the largest coffee businesses in America with branches throughout the country. Over time, USCO became known for itsquality coffees – including some of the most popular brands such as Maxwell House, Kona Coffee, Peet's Coffee etcetera – as well as its iconic red cups which have become symbols of American café culture worldwide. In 1974, USCO merged with Brown Brothers Harriman (BBH) to form what is now Starbucks Corporation . Lincolnton is a town in Union County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2000 census. Lincolnton was founded by Yankees in 1838 as a small community on the banks of the Yadkin River. It became an important cotton port and then a major slave-importing center during the antebellum era. The town declined after Reconstruction and experienced several cycles of decline and revival from the early 21st century until its current decline. Lincolnton is located at (35.566667, -79.616667). It has a total area of 362 acres (156 hectares). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total population of 1,890, all of whom are white or black American citizens who were born in America or some other country subject to U.S. jurisdiction. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,642 people residing in Lincolnton proper and 246 households outlying to it; 53% were white married couples living together, 29% had one child under age 18 living with them, 26% had two children under age 18 living with them, 11% had three or more children under age 18 living with them and 6% were non-families. In terms of race/ethnicity: 92% white Methodist Protestant; 8% African American; 2% Hispanic
