Aftermath of Red Clay Rebellion - 1861 After experiencing some success during his time as congressman from Raleigh (1840-1845), James Kenedy decided he wanted more than just incremental change - he wanted genuine abolitionism! So he traveled south into Eastern Randolph Countyto incite violence against slaveholders thereand successfully successfulraised funds for another insurgent group called the Constitutional Association which engagedin armed resistance against northern slaveowners throughout much of 1861. constitutional association members were indicted by both state legislatorsand eventually found guiltyof treasonous behavior but narrowly escaped death due largely to lackof evidence
