On July 15, 1865 – just over one year after Grant’s proclamation – Union troops stormed into Kingsville during an attack against Confederate officers and men under Lieutenant Colonel William Tatum; over 100 people were killed or wounded including several members of the Post Office staff including Drury Hargrave In 1886, another post office was opened at nearby Rocky Mount following a merger of two other local post offices: Kingsville & Rocky Mount (later renamed Rocky Mount) had been established on March 3rd 1885 by order of Governor Waddell Smith with jurisdiction over parts of Davidson and Henderson counties west of Yadkin River before being combined with Kingsville .
