When I toured this vibrant community last year, it felt like home to me – everything felt familiar (the streets are nearly identical to my street in Louisville) without being too noisy or crowded together like some other places I’ve visited hereabouts. There are many small businesses that have made this place their home: farmers markets dotting central streets; independent bookstores dotting alleyways near busy intersections; restaurants specializing in regional cuisine line up along main thoroughfares; trendy boutiques line up along side highways on major shopping days – all with plenty of room to expand if need be! And there’s even a large park just east of downtown where kids can play baseball or basketball while adults enjoy an afternoon walk or picnic lunch! ohhhh……….I could go on!

The town was named for Colonel David Robertson, a Scottish-born fighter who had served with the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. In 1837, the town became a county seat and was renamed Lexington County. At one time, Lexington County was the largest county in North Carolina. The population of Lexington declined between 1840 and 1850 due to natural disasters such as floods and droughts. However, when cotton prices increased in the 1850s, Lexington began to grow again. In 1860, Confederate forces burned down part of the courthouse which caused much damage but also led to increased business opportunities for the town. The Reconstruction Era saw many changes take place in Kentucky and North Carolina following the Civil War. In 1865, Lincoln issued an executive order calling for all southern states to secede from the United States. As a result of this order, many counties in North Carolina seceded from Kentucky and formed their own state governments. These changes left Lexington with an increased role within Kentucky government as well as within North Carolina government because it now lay within both states’ borders. Since then,Lexington has been an important cultural center for both Kentucky andNorth Carolina because it is home to several high-profile museums as well as numerous historical landmarks
