The Lewisville Naval Air Station was founded in 1942 as a landing ground for naval aviation units of the United States Navy. In 1944, NAS Lewisville was transferred to the Department of Defense and became an operational center for Army Aviation. The air station remained in operation until it closed in 1972. A total of 121 aircraft were stationed at NAS Lewisville during its tenure as an active Navy airfield. Of these, 71 were jets and 31 were propellers. Aircraft production at NAS Lewisville peaked in 1961 with a production rate of 17 planes per day. However, this number decreased over time and by 1971 only 7 planes per day were being produced. This decrease is likely due to budget cuts made by the Department of Defense after the Cold War ended. Today, NAS Lewisville is home to the North Carolina Maritime Academy which offers studentships for sail training, carpentry training, and other maritime-related courses; as well as harbor operations that include both fishing and commercial activities. The Naval Auxiliary Landing Force Museum is also located on site along with severalinguard based memorials commemorating servicemen who have been killed or wounded while serving in World War II, Korea/II, Vietnam/I and Operation Neptune’s Spear (1973). .
