The fort was a strategic position on the banks of the Yadkin River, and its personnel were used to protect Loyalists from British forces. In 1814, Fort Randolph was built nearby to support Confederate forces during the War of 1812. The fort served as a training ground for Confederate officers and soldiers until it was surrendered in 1865. In 1868, General James A. Fayette bought land at what is now Lee Street and Grayson Avenue in Lewisville to build an army post called Fort Raleigh. The post was named for General Richard Neale Rutherford, who had helped lead Union troops against Rebel forces in the American Civil War. The fort was manned by Union troops during the Siege of Petersburg in 1863; however, it surrendered shortly thereafter. In 1898, Lewisville became the site of World’s Columbian Exposition ( Chicago). More than 1 million people visited the exposition over four days in October/November 1998. Lewisville is a small town in Swain County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. Lewisville is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Lewisville were Native Americans who hunted and gathered game on the area's interior plains. In 1828, Major General John Cushing and his army invaded Swain County from Tennessee and discovered extensive tracts of rich bottom land that had been unclaimed by other counties. They offered to sell this land to any person who could make a claim to it, which led to the founding of Lewisville by Captain David Porter in 1828. The first post office was established at Lewisville in 1830. By 1840, there were five stores and twenty-one homes in the community. A school was started in 1835 with one teacher and twelve students. By 1860, there were twenty-four stores and ninety homes in Lewisville; four churches served as focal points for religious activity within the community: Wesleyan Methodist (1838), Baptist (1841), Presbyterian (1845), and Episcopal (1848). One of the first businesses founded within Lewisville was an insurance agency called Porter & Company which operated from 1857 until 1861 when it went out of business because of financial troubles related to Civil War hostilities. In 1865, Robert Easley became president of Orangeburg Southern Railroad which ran through Lewisville; he decided that a new depot should be built near what is now downtown LewisVILLE so that passengers could easily get into town for shopping or other purposes while their train took them away again on their way back home from work or elsewhere within Orangeburg County. This depot became known as "Easley’s Depot" after him and it remains standing today adjacent to Highway 565 just south of downtownLewisVILLE
Lewisville was founded by Captain John Lewis in 1775. The town developed around the courthouse, which was built in 1777. In 1838, the town was renamed Nauvoo after Illinois' president, Joseph Smith. Aftermiah Nash bought the courthouse and land from Joseph Smith in 1853, he began to build a community on the property. Nash's dream of creating a new city center for Nauvoo led to his death in 1863 at the hands of Confederate troops.
