Lewisville is a small town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,922 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lewisville is known for its white picket fences and bluegrass music festivals. The town was founded in 1872 by James Lewis and his brother John Lewis as a cotton plantation on the Hiwassee River. In 1881, James Lewis' son-in-law, Howell Cobb, purchased the original farm from James Lewis and renamed it "Lewisville". In 1907, Howell Cobb's son Pee Wee bought the farm from Howell Cobb's widow Ethel Moseley. Pee Wee built a new house on the property in 1923 which he named "The White House". In 1957, Clyde Coleman purchased land east of Lewisville along Hiwassee River for what would become Coleman Air Force Base. The base became an important center for research and development during World War II and Cold War years. In 1976–1977, portions of I-95 were rerouted through Lewisville to increase access to AFB from eastern Durham County while still keeping traffic moving southbound past AFB into Wake County. This allowed more people to live close to AFB without having to travel far each day

In 1865, Lewisville was named one of the first towns in North Carolina to be established by act of Congress. The town grew quickly and soon boasted a population of over 500 people. In 1872, Lewisville was made an incorporated village with a Mayor and Aldermen elected by popular vote. The town continued to grow and in 1886 it reached its present size with a population of 1,500 people. Throughout its history, Lewisville has been characterized as "the most prosperous agricultural town in central North Carolina."
