Lewisville is a town in Forsyth County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,858 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham–Forsyth Combined Statistical Area. Lewisville is located on I-85 and U.S. Route 130, about 20 minutes east of Durham and 25 minutes west of Raleigh. The town site was laid out by General John Forbes in 1825 as a post office called "Forbesburg". He named it for Admiral James Lewis, who had commanded HMS " Victory" during the American Revolution and who had been made a member of Congress by President George Washington. The first buildings were built in 1827; they were a small log cabin with two rooms and no stove or oven. The first store was opened in 1830 by Wm Hanchett & Bros., which became the first store in Forsyth County. In 1835, Ladd's Store was founded by Elias Ladd, another pioneer settler in Lewisville. A post office called "Laddsboro" was established here on April 27, 1861, but it reverted to its original name on May 10th due to lack of business. In 1865, John Denton established an oil refinery at Lewisville after purchasing land from Andrew Johnston for $4 per acre (2¢ an acre). This helped spur development around nearby Cary and Duke University before World War II destroyed most industrial activity in eastern North Carolina following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor that summer

The Lewisville community began as a small log cabin that was built by pioneer John Lewis on the north side of the village of Lewisville in 1827. It grew quickly as pioneers bought and sold land in and around Lewisville. In 1869, the town was designated as the county seat of Forsyth County. In 1914, coal mining started in Lewisville and quickly filled up the local rivers and streams with water used to cool mine equipment. By 1922, over 90% of all coal mined in Forsyth County came from mines within 5 miles of Lewisville. When production stopped in 1984, water use decreased significantly but still caused environmental damage due to runoff into surrounding watersheds. In 2007-2009 an Environmental Restoration Program was created to clean up abandoned mines and restore impacted ecosystems near Lewisville The community has had several name changes throughout its history: Lewisville Station (1827-1868) Lewisville (1869-1914) Forsyth City (1915-1920) Forsyth Mines (1922-1984) Lewisviile Development Corporation (1986-present)
