Lenoir is a small town in northwestern North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan statistical area. Lenoir was founded in 1792 by General Robert Lenoir and his wife Elizabeth Caldwell. The first white men to live in Lenoir were John Culp and his son James who arrived in 1796, followed by William Wynne and his son Richard on July 26, 1800. In 1802, Captain Nathan Bedford established a store here which became a stopping place for wagon trains traveling between Cumberland County and other parts of the region. In 1830, Reverend George White organized the Church of God in Christ (CGC) here after spending time ministering to residents of nearby Kinston. Reverend White's church building still stands today, used as an educational center for students from Lenoir and surrounding areas until it closed its doors in 1990. Lenoir experienced significant growth during World War II with the influx of soldiers returning home from fighting in Europe and Asia. A munitions plant was built here during World War II which produced artillery shells for both Allied and Axis forces; however, it ceased operations before the war ended. The town slowly regained its lost prosperity following World War II but declined again beginning in the late 1960s as development pressure increased along Interstate 95 near Durham Regional Airport . However, some redevelopment has occurred recently including construction of a new high school complex which includes an event hall that can seat up to 1,500 people; renovation of many local businesses;and creation of several new parks including one that features an open-air amphitheater seating up to 12000 spectators capacity

Lenoir is a town in Lenoir County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. The Lenoir Historic District is a national historic district and museum located in the town. It includes buildings from the 1830s to the 1920s including the home of Nathaniel P. Lenoir and other notable residents such as General James B. McAllister and Senator John C. Calhoun. Lenoir was founded by farmers George Witherspoon and Ebenezer Holmes on November 3, 1824 as a small community near what is now downtown Lenoir. The town grew rapidly due to its location close to Raleigh–Durham Railway lines and easy access to markets for goods that came through Elizabeth City or Chapel Hill. In 1827, the North Carolina Railroad arrived in town making it easier for people to get around and providing more jobs for local farmers. By 1830, Lenoir had a school, Baptist chapel, blacksmith shop, storehouse, two-room cabin with a outhouse used as an office by postmaster Benjamin Thornton (1811-1893), millinery shop operated by Mrs. Sarah Latta (1792-1872), four wells drilled nearby – one producing water for use in household lamps while another furnished water for industry – three churches - Episcopal church built in 1829; Methodist church built in 1840; First Baptist Church erected in 1850 – all without formal parishioners until after 1861 when Rev. Antoine Estienne organized them into what are now known as denominations within Christianity - Anglican (Anglican Missionary Society of America) building was dedicated on December 10th 1865; Baptist church burned down on October 6th 1870 but new Baptist church erected soon afterwards – all without formal services until 1886 when Rev . J . H . White organized services there also under denomination name “The United Brethren”
