The Lenoir Hotel and Casino is located in Lenoir. Lenoir was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1792 as a small plantation on Hatteras Island, now known as Roanoke Island. In 1827, the town was renamed for General Nathaniel Lyon because he had been an early settler and friend of the founders. The first courthouse building was built in 1829 by local farmers and mechanics who donated materials to build it. In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early invaded North Carolina and marched through Lenoir without warning or warning the inhabitants; many people were taken prisoner or executed without trial or due process of law. A few days after his march began, Early's army reachedLenoir and burned buildings and killed all but two adults in what became known as "The Massacre at Lenoir." The townspeople rebuilt quickly with local volunteers working on their behalf. Downtown growth continued throughout prohibition until finally becoming fully vibrant post prohibition period characterized by robust real estate development along US 64 corridor that continues into present day . Lenoir was founded in 1775 by Captain John Lenoir and his wife, Margaret. The town was named for Lord Lenoir, the British general who fought at the Battle of Saratoga. The Lenoirs were among the first white settlers in what is now North Carolina. They built a log cabin on the present site of Lenoir in 1776. The Lenoirs were successful farmers and their farmstead became known as "Thevil". In 1814, they moved to Raleigh and continued to operate their farm until their death in 1870.
