Lenoir was founded in 1792 by Englishman John Lenoir and his wife Hannah Stewart. The first post office was established in 1793. Lenoir has a rich history that can be traced back to its earliest days as a community on the banks of the Little River. In 1817, Lenoir became one of the original towns in Mecklenburg County when it was created from parts of Pittsylvania County. By 1860, Lenoir had become an important agricultural center with more than 100 farms and 2 schools. In 1865, during the American Civil War, General Robert Ewell's Confederate Army landed at Lake Norman in what is now Lenoir and burned most of the town before retreating back to Virginia Hill near Raleigh. On April 12, 1865, Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived at Monmouth County Pier and ordered all Confederate prisoners brought over there without delay to face justice under military law rather than being released into Rebel hands upon their return home. When Grant learned about this policy he ordered his troops to open fire on these unarmed civilians and they killed 44 innocent men women and children before withdrawing back across Lakes James and Wilson counties line.. Lenoir has successfully rebuilt since then with many businesses starting up including M&M's Pizza which opened its first location here in 1984 and still operates today! The local grocery store (Grocery Outlet) closed down but reopened as Ponderosa Market & Grill later that same year! Today you will find many places to eat such as Hardee's BBQ which opened their first location here in 1997! There are also several hotels including Hilton Garden Inn & Suites which opened its doors here in 2002! All of these establishments have helped contribute toLenoira's current resurgence… not just economically but culturally too!
