The Lenoir Coffee Company was started in 1912 by J.D. Lenoir, who was a coffee farmer and roaster in the area. The company became well-known for its high-quality coffee, which is still served today. In 1955, the company merged with Dutch Bros., which made it one of the largest coffee companies in North Carolina. The Lenoir Coffee Company produced over 2 million pounds of beans each year and distributed them throughout the Southeast United States.
There is no doubt that coffee has been a popular drink for centuries. The first references to coffee can be found in ancient Greece and Rome. In Ancient Rome, coffee was used as a stimulant to help people stay awake during long hours of work. It was also used as an anti-inflammatory agent. The Egyptians were the first to learn how to roast coffee and make it into a beverage. They did this by burning cedar wood which gave off a sweet smell and produced a light brown liquid called ichor. During the Middle Ages, different types of beans were roasted and brewed for various purposes such as drinking, medicinal purposes, or baking bread. At one point, coffee became so popular that it was even taxed in some places! Coffee beans were ground up and put into small pots or baskets where they would be heated until they produced a thick black slag on top called “coffee fat” which would then be poured over hot water and left to cool slowly before being used in brewing. This method of roasting made for better flavor because the beans were roasted at different degrees of heat according to their unique qualities (light, medium, dark). Coffee began becoming available in grocery stores around the world starting in the late 1800s when methods of shipping goods by sea started using kegs instead of sacks full of fresh beans. By 1900, smuggling coffees through Customs had decreased significantly thanks largely to prohibition laws at that time! As more people traveled the world, they brought back new ways to enjoy good quality espresso from their local cafes! Lenoir was founded in 1792 by Revolutionary War veteran, Nathaniel Lenoir. The town was named after General Cornwallis and his army's retreat from Yorktown. The Lenoir family resided in the town for over 200 years and their descendants continue to live there today. One of the most notable Lenoir alumni is author J.D. Salinger who attended a public school in the town before going on to attend Yale University where he met Ernest Hemingway and published his first novel, "The Great Gatsby." Lenoir is located in present-day Caldwell County, North Carolina and has a population of around 20,000 people. It is one of the smallest towns in North Carolina but it has a rich history that can be seen all around its website or throughout its city hall which is home to many artifacts from past Lenoir residents such as an old sawmill and cotton gin dating back to 1814. In addition to its rich history, Lenoir is also known for its delicious food which can be found at several local restaurants including the Old Country Store which serves up traditional English cuisine such as venison crumbles and fried onions, as well as communist-era pizzas called "Pizza Punks."
