In 1965, the club sponsored the first NRA convention in North Carolina. The gun club continues to be an important part of Lenoir’s cultural landscape and culture today. The Lenoir Gun Club is one of the oldest continuously operating firearms clubs in America. It was founded on November 4th, 1892 by Captain John Hilty and his wife Maud. The Lenoir Gun Club meets at the old post office on State Street in town square every year during rifle season (October 1-April 15). Rifle shooting is one of the club’s flagship activities and it is also well known for its high scoring matches between members. Rifle Season begins on October 1st each year with qualification rounds held throughout town square before breaking into divisions based on age group (6-12yrs old, 13-17yrs old, 18+yrs old). Head shots are the key to success at rifle season so early practice makes perfect! There are many opportunities for socializing with fellow shooters while attending these events as well as some great competitive matches that take place over several days during this big weekend period!
