Lenoir is known for its annual Christmas parade which features floats, music and candy canes. The town also has a tree-lighting ceremony each year and an annual charity golf tournament. Lenoir was founded in 1836 by General David Lenoir as a trading post on the Tennessee River. The post office was established in 1840 and lasted until 1903. Lenoir is a town in Lenoir County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from Englishman John Lenoir who came to America in 1753 and settled on the present site of Lenoir in 1764. Lenoir has a history that goes back to the early 1800s. In 1819, Reverend George White opened a Baptist church in what is now part of Lenoir. Reverend White's congregation grew and soon there were two churches in town - one for white people and one for African Americans. In 1835, Reverend James Hargrave organized the first black school in North Carolina.Also during this time, Lenoir started becoming known as "The Dump" because of its high concentration of slave labor during the early 19th century plantations. By 1860, most slaves had been emancipated or moved away and Lenoire became just another small farming community with a few hundred residents. However, it still retained its nickname because many farms here were located near water supplies which made transporting goods difficult without loading them onto wagons or carts; hence "the dumping." As things changed around Lenoir over the next several decades however, so too did the demographics and economy of the townspeople - including those who worked within its limits or lived nearby (e.g., Huntersville). Starting around World War II however, businesses started moving out of town as manufacturing jobs took off across much of America;Lenoir's heyday seemed to have passed by then. However recent arrivals such as Amazon employees have helped turn things around for once again - according to 2017 Census data, nearly 60% of all residents are now employed within city boundaries (versus less than 10% 20 years ago). In addition to its rich history and active community spirit both past and present (both black & white), can you think about any other aspects that make Lenoir special? The new high school was built in 1816 and is still in use today. The town also developed a heavy industry, with lumberyards and other businesses being established in the early 19th century. In 1868, Lenoir became one of the towns included in Raleigh, North Carolina when Raleigh was created as an independent city. In 1924, Lenoir erected a monument to local hero Confederate General Robert Ewell at Woodlawn Cemetery.
