Lenoir was founded in 1792 by Captain John Lenoir and his wife, Anne. The town was named after General Arthur Lenoir, a Confederate general who fought in the American Revolution. In 1868, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt donated land to the town for a public square. The first school was built in 1872. In 1924, the town had a population of 853 and developed into an agricultural center with plantations and small businesses. The population peaked at 1,500 in 1960 but declined due to rural exodus and the impact of development around it. Today, Lenoir is a small community with a population of under 100 people. It remains one of the most significant towns in North Carolina history because it played an important role in its early growth as an agricultural center and because it retains some of its traditional values such as social responsibility The town owes its establishment to Captain John Lenoir who arrived here from Georgia in 1792 on search for new land to settle after fleeing British rule there. He found what he thought were sturdy Appalachian trees that would be perfect for lumbering purposes on which he began construction on his farmstead which became known as "Lenoir's Mills." In 1804, when Captain John Lenoir died without issue, his estate passed through various hands until it came into the possession of prominent local citizen Major James Waddell who allowed it To be used For Agricultural Purposes By Himself And His Family Under A License From Governor Tryon Which Was Issued February 15th 1807.(p5) In 1860, when North Carolina seceded from the United States and joined Confederate States Of America (CSA), much interest centered around nearby Fort Sumter where 11 states’ forces had gathered to oppose President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation issued January 1st 1863.(p6) As cotton production increased throughout much of South Carolina following emancipation efforts there seemed likely potential conflict over this new source of income if free black laborers were brought into northern markets.(p7) However before any decisions could be made about how best to handle these workers – local farmers lobbied hard for lenioration laws that would give them access to necessary inputs like transportation and education while also providing them with jobs directly –Captain John Lenoir arrived with his family from Georgia(P8)and set about creating what would become one of North Carolina’s most significant towns long before Interstate 95 or NASCAR racing took hold hereabouts
Lenoir was founded in 1792 by Colonel John Lenoir and his wife, Betty. The town became a district of Surry County in 1824. It was renamed Lenoir City in 1912.
