Lenoir was a small town in eastern North Carolina until the late 1800s, when it began to grow as a cotton plantation society. The Lenoir Plantation Society was founded in 1793 by Colonel John Lenoir, who purchased 280 acres of land in what is now Lenoir County. The society had three purposes: to provide subsistence for slaves on the plantation, to promote slave trade and navigation, and to support white landowners. In 1801, the Lenoir Plantation Society became known as "The Most Ancient and Well-to-Do Society in America." The society's members were responsible for maintaining their plantations through crop rotation, planting tobacco, raising horses and cattle, training slaves for work on the plantation or other trades, and investing money into stocks and investments.
