In 1875, Laurinburg became a city following incorporation by vote of its citizens. This decision was made because many people in Laurinburg felt that cityhood would provide more opportunities for social activity and economic development than rural life did at that time. Laurinburg was a small town in Swain County, North Carolina, United States. It was founded in 1881 by John Laurin and his family. The Laurinburg post office was established in 1881, and the first store opened in1885. In 1909, the Laurinburg School District was created, and the first school building was built in 1912. The town ceased to exist as a municipality on February 15, 1924 when it merged with neighboring Whitehaven to form Whitehaven-Laurinburg Township. On December 11, 1957, Laurinburg township became part of Swain County after its line of defense moved from Whitehaven to Swain County. John A. Laurin III9 born October 1st 1880 near Knoxville TN died December 10th 1960 age 85 years old son of John A. Laurin II who immigrated to America around 1830 from Denmark Lannonburgh Nc he married Lucille Jane Newell on March 17th 1902 they had one daughter named Susan Elizabeth (1905-2001) two sons named John Allan (1907-1986) and Donald Hale (1910-2002). Mrs Newell died on September 22nd 1966 at the age of 83 years old her husband did not known about her death until 1984 when she left him some papers that were sent to him by their granddaughter who lived in California Mr Laurinberg remarried on November 30th 1959 Barbara Ann Fritsche (born 1931) they had two daughters named Keisha Kaye(1969-)and Shannon Nicole(1977-) both grew up hereabouts their mother also raised plants Ira Hargrave which is now located just east of town off US Highway 421 between US Highway 421/SR 716 & SR 828
