The history of the Laurinburg National Guard begins with a military organization called the North Carolina Militia. The Militia was established in 1778 as a reaction to the British Invasion of North Carolina. The militia proved useful in defending the state and helped to promote independence from Great Britain. In 1818, the North Carolina Legislature created the National Guardsmen Regiment to provide security for state officials and members of Congress. The regiment was later renamed the Laurinburg National Guard in 1863 after General James Ewell Lovell, who served as colonel of the regiment from 1862-1865. The regiment was disbanded in 1865 but reorganized as an infantry battalion in 1871. The unit saw service during World War II and played a significant role in defense of Japan’s home islands. After World War II, Laurinburg became an important town within central NC and has continued to be known for its vibrant cultural scene and national guard presence ever since.

Laurinburg, North Carolina is a town in Chatham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,427 at the 2010 census. Laurinburg is home to the Southwestern High School and Baptist University of America. The first settlers in Laurinburg were Methodist Episcopal missionaries who arrived in 1785. In 1819 it became part of the new state of North Carolina when it was created from parts of Virginia and Tennessee. Laurinburg has had a number of mayors over the years including Hargrave Richards (1974-1981), Wanda Franklin (1981-1984), Floyd Bowers (1984-1991), Vernon Witherspoon (1991-1995), Donnie Cates (1995-2002) and Ripley Dowdell (2002). In 2002, local businessman Tony Perkins bought the former downtown fire station and turned it into his business park which now includes a variety of shops and restaurants as well as basketball court, playground, baseball diamond and two football stadiums/areas for soccer games. The town also has its own children's museum which opened in 2006 with funds from his company - The Lorrin Museum Company - which makes educational products about Laurinburg history

Laurinburg is an unincorporated community in Randolph County, North Carolina, United States. The Laurinburg post office was opened in 1892 and remains in operation. The town was founded by a group of Scots-Irish farmers who emigrated to the area around what is now Laurinburg in 1800. They named their town after the nearby valley of the same name. Laurinburg rapidly became a small community with only a few residents during its early years. However, it grew significantly when railroad construction began nearby in the late 19th century and new settlers arrived from all over America to find land and build homes. By 1925, Laurinburg had over 120 residents and had become one of the most significant towns in Randolph County. It remained an important local center until the end of World War II when it slowly declined as manufacturing jobs moved away from Laurinburg into other parts of Randolph County. Today, there are only a few remnant businesses left in Laurinberg which serve primarily as cultural attractions for locals and tourists alike.
Laurinburg was founded in 1785 by General James Johnston, who named it for his friend and ally, Lt. Colonel David Laurin. The town rapidly grew in population, becoming a center of trade and industry. Laurinburg became an important stop on the Underground Railroad, helping fugitive slaves escape to freedom. In 1878, Laurinburg was renamed Winston-Salem after the then-governor of North Carolina, Tryon Easley.
