Laurinburg is a town in Randolph County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. Laurinburg is located on the south side of the Yadkin River. It is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1837 by General James Harnett and his wife Elizabeth as a stop on their journey from Henderson to Charlotte. The current courthouse was built in 1906 and has been used as a municipal building since then. Laurinburg is home to two state prisons: One operated by the Department of Correction and another operates under contract with Central Prison Authority across I-95 from downtown Winston-Salem.
