Laurinburg, North Carolina is a small town in Yancey County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,564 at the 2010 census. Laurinburg is located on I-40 at the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains and about east of Hendersonville. It is known for its historical sites such as Laurinburg National Military Park and for its annual "Blue Ridge Folk Festival." The first settler in what became Laurinburg was John Kennedy who arrived in 1776. The town was named after General James A. McDowell's military victory over Native Americans at Battle of Fort Mifflin on April 14, 1786. Many people came to Laurinburg during the early 1800s to escape the slave trade that began in South Carolina. There were also many farmers and traders who moved into this area during this time frame. Laurinburg was incorporated as a city by an act of the state legislature on March 1, 1907. In 1928 it annexed the surrounding towns of Morehead City and Bladenboro; these towns had all been part of Johnston County until 1907. The following year saw another annexation when Unita Borough added its territory to Laurinburg proper; this occurred because Unita had been detached from Johnston County due to changes in local government laws affecting apportionment among counties within North Carolina (these laws were repealed in 1955). On July 1, 1933, rural part of neighboring Henderson County merged with Laurinberg proper to form one municipality under the name "Laurinburgh". This merger resulted from a campaign led by Mayor J W Fenton that aimed to rid Laurinburgh of several problems - including two successive administrations which had failed to make necessary repairs to streets and sidewalks which caused extensive damage throughout the community; high rates for firewood and water; lack of public safety amenities such as a police station or library; and increasing crime rates which made it difficult for citizens living outside central business districts to get involved in their communities' affairs.
