It began as a plantation on Hatteras Island with nine slaves and grew to eighty-one families by 1840. Laurinburg's first store opened in 1851. The town became an agricultural center during the late 19th century due to its location on the intersection of two major railroads serving eastern North Carolina and South Carolina. Laurinburg's economy changed again during World War II when Duplin County became part of the United States military zone surrounding Japan because of its strategic importance as a shipping point for Allied forces invading Japan from the southeast. For several years after World War II, Laurinburg experienced an influx of refugees from eastern Marshall County due to the war's effect on cotton farming there; this trend ended around 1960 when most refugees returned home to their homes in Marshall County. In recent years, Laurinburg has regained some lost economic ground through numerous businesses established within its limits since 2000 that have helped improve local economy: such as Bluegrass BBQ & Grills (2002), English Muffins (2006), Laurinburg residents are proud of their history and culture which they attribute to their community's close proximity to both Eastern Cary and Johnson City, Tennessee where many people of African descent originated from before coming westward into North Carolina. Many prominent figures associated withDuplin County duringits early days including General Nathanael Greene also lived or worked hereabouts including Governor Tryon who called it "the best place I ever saw."
