The Knights of the Coast are a proud and historic chapter of the Navy. The organization was founded on October 25, 1872 by Commodore George Dewey in Knightdale, North Carolina as a force to protect American interests in the Caribbean Sea. The Knights were disbanded in 1942 after World War II but have been reborn several times over the years. In 1960, they became part of Naval Air Command and eventually assumed their present role as an aviation squadron within Naval Air Station Jacksonville. The Knights currently serve as members of both the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Squadron Varsity (NMASV) and United States Coast Guard Academy Squadron One (USCGASO).
Knightdale is a city in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 37,890 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Alamance County. Knightdale is home to one of the largest concentrations of students in the state and it also has a large concentration of businesses and professionals. This city was founded by General John C. Fremont on November 12, 1827 as a military outpost on what is now called State Road 524 west of downtown Knightdale. The town grew rapidly due to its many agricultural products and mineral resources that made it an important stop for wagon trains heading eastward across South Carolina during the 1830s and 1840s. The first post office in Knightdale was established on December 21, 1828, and served until February 9, 1829. The original name for the town was "Fremont's Fort". The name change came about because General John C. Fremont felt that his main objective was to protect settlers from Indians who were terrorizing them in neighboring counties such as Wilkesboro and Gaston County (then part of North Carolina). He decided that Knightsville would be more likely to be accepted by others if it received a more prestigious name than Fremont's Fort which he felt would reflect better upon him as an American general fighting against Indian attacks outside his base of operations in South Carolina rather than within his own country In 1839, when land near present-day Knightdale became available for purchase through regulation under the New Deal program known as Homestead Act legislation Ulysses S. Grant purchased 640 acres (253 hectares) including what is now downtown Knightdale from David Harnett for $10 per acre ($2 per square mile). Grants nearby Panthertown offered similar deals but went up only 20%, so Grant ordered then-Mayor James Fenton to start mergers among all these potential buyers so that they could become one municipality with centralized water supplies, schools and other amenities needed for modern day towns like Raleigh/Durham or Charlotte/Wilmington On April 15th 1865 Union soldiers burned down sections of what are now called Main Street between High Street and Fourth Street while retreating from Confederate forces at Johnson City after two days battle fought along THE RIVER NATIONAL HIGHWAY over control of this important transportation route linking Wilmington with Petersburg In 1865 when President Abraham Lincoln signed Executive Order No. 10 Downing–Gates21 giving federal lands east Oklahoma Territory - including present day Knightdale - to freed African Americans under Reconstruction This event makes possible our understanding today about how Black Americans acquisition rights proceeded thru various channels throughout much later history especially thru eminent domain laws

Knightdale was first settled in 1828 and named for General Arthur Cornwallis Knight. It became a city in 1903. The town of Knightdale was founded on December 12, 1828 by General Arthur Cornwallis Knight and his wife Elizabeth Moncrieffe Knight as a post office between them at what is now known as Mount Airy and Hickory Streets. The name "Knightdale" came from Cornwallis' service in the British Army during the American Revolution. In 1853, when Harnett County was created, Knightdale became its county seat. But by 1861, when Union troops burned all but one of Raleigh's 7 townships (including Knightdale), Raleigh had prevailed over Manassas Junction where Johnston's Confederate forces were headquartered to take control of the seaports along the coast and their economy would be focused on Wilmington until 1863 when they again surrendered to Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant. In 1865, Raleigh re-established its original boundaries with parts of Durham and Catawba Counties west of Johnson Street while including much of what today constitutes Knightdale within its limits east of Johnson Street as well as inner Chapel Hill/High Point section that lay within Wake Forest University boundaries before it joined Durham County in 1913
Knightdale was founded in 1751 by Colonel John Knight and his family. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources, including coal and lumber. In 1881, the Knights of Columbus organized the community into a borough. In 1924, the borough became a city and is still known as Knightdale.
